Soviet flag added to Blair Boulevard in an attempt to be “More inclusive”
Montgomery Blair administration announced Thursday that they intended to increase the number of flags on Blair Boulevard, 4 new flags representing various former countries around the world were installed including the flag of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, the Austrian Empire, the Royal Emblem of the Kingdom of France, and the flag of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. This is all part of the continuing effort to promote inclusivity in a racially segregated school. In her weekly newsletter, Glorious Leader, Principal, and newly named Chairperson of the Administration Soviet Johnson said “Promoting inclusivity has always been a priority. Historically it has been restricted to existing countries but we want to recognize people with heritages in former ones as well.” The flag, with its hammer and sickle topped with a star is an international symbol of communism and this has caused concern among some students. Ed Chuckataroo, a 10th grader at Blair said “I don’t mind the French or Austrian ones, they're just old flags, but I’ve been reading some good speeches by this old Senator Joe McCarthy and it would seem that Communism is bad.” Ed led a group of students in protest of the flag but all he received was a copy of The Manifesto of the Communist Party by Karl Marx and Fredrich Engles. Other students have raised concerns about the Yugoslav flag due to the ongoing strife in the Balkans but this too has been blown off as “A protest against the true rule of Alexander II, King of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.”
